Encore Innovation Fellow Joins CSW Team

By Kathy Stocking.

At CSW, we’re invested in our belief that people who want to work should always have that opportunity. And we’re not alone.

We’re currently hosting Encore Innovation Fellow, Beverly Burns, who leads our efforts to support Michigan workers who are seeking “encore careers” – jobs that combine personal meaning, continued income and social impact – in the second half of life.

In Michigan, Encore.org draws boomers to encore careers that provide personal fulfillment doing paid work, and produces a windfall of talent to help solve the most challenging social problems of our time, including poverty, the environment, education and health care.

As an employer doing such meaningful work, Encore.org helped us receive a grant to support Beverly’s work from now through September 2014. Beverly will be working to build policies and practices that support people seeking encore careers in Michigan.

Our focus on this work began in partnership with the Luella Hannan Foundation and Operation ABLE, funded by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. Our involvement grew into work with BOOM! The New Economy, which was support by AARP (and for a time, TechTown of WSU/Detroit).

Now we’re supporting a statewide focus and anticipate getting to the level of broader policy recommendations around the Encore platform (see their website www.encore.org/fellowships). With Beverly’s help, of course.
