Sonia Harb serves as Senior Policy Associate for CSW, providing strategic leadership for the organization’s portfolio of work in Detroit and supporting specific workforce development system building initiatives. Her focus is on a mix of strategies and work at the intersection of improving educational attainment, increasing economic opportunity, and reducing poverty in Detroit and other communities.
In addition to her CSW appointment, Sonia provides leadership for the School of Social Work Technical Assistance Center at the University of Michigan. The Center is dedicated to establishing and promoting socially just communities and supports Detroit residents and stakeholders as they work to strengthen and improve their neighborhoods. She also serves on the Vice Provost Council on Engaged Civic Education.
Prior to joining the University of Michigan, she led the establishment of a multi-million-dollar Michigan Works! One Stop Service Center operation for ACCESS, was responsible for early childhood, youth development and adult literacy programming and launched ACCESS Growth Center, a department dedicated to entrepreneurial support and economic development. She has served on State commissions and non-profit boards, most recently serving as Past Chairperson of Michigan’s Commission on Community Action and Economic Opportunity and as current Vice-Chairperson for the Michigan League for Public Policy Board of Directors.
In 2017, Sonia was contributing author for A Twenty-First Century Approach to Community Change: Partnering to Improve Life Outcomes for Youth and Families in Under-Served Neighborhoods, an Oxford University Press publication. She earned her Master Degree from the University of Michigan School of Social Work Advanced Standing Program and her Bachelor degree from the Honors College at Michigan State University.
